A Stone Village Facing the Mount Olympus

Wandering around the Greek villages it’s impossible not to pause for a while and admire the beauty of the houses which represent the aesthetics and the culture of each region. Greek architecture is all about blending with the environment, as if the houses are there to compliment nature and enhance its beauty. My trip to Nymfaio in the prefecture of Florina, was a breathtaking experience. The stone built houses with the light blue windows bow to the Majesty of Mount Olympus overlooking lake Vegoritida. Houses have thick walls and dominant features just like the defense walls that people built in the ancient times. No wonder why modern Greeks use the same technique of dry stone till today. Once a typical farming village, Nymfaio was transformed to a beautiful tourist attraction in the late 90’s. The view from the small observatory just before you enter Nymfaio’s gate is surreal. I was lucky enough to take a picture while the moon was entering the scene fusing with the rest of the beauty.

The children prefer to call Nymfaio the “Bear Village” since the environmental preservation  www.arcturos.gr organization is located there. The organization was established in 1992 and is focused on the protection of the brown bear and the wolf that live in the region. Arcturos is connected to the village through a 15 minute walking path in the woods that I highly recommend. You can book a special group guide in English when the site is not busy with too many visitors. Nymfaio has many chalets and can accommodate approximately 300 guests; once you pass the gate you feel like you have  stepped into a movie set where everyone is waiting for you to write and narrate your own story. Each story telling has it’s own significance in this place, after all the view of the skyline at 1350 meters altitude is endless.
