ON 68 AND MORE BITS OF ADVICE BY KEVIN KELLY

Who is Kevin Kelly?

Kevin Kelly is Senior Maverick and Cofounder at Wired Magazine. He is also editor and publisher of the Cool Tools website, which gets approximately half a million unique visitors per month.

On his 68th birthday he decided to do his adult kids a favor. He wrote down 68 bits of advice that  he wished he’d known when he was young. The success was so huge  that Viking Penguin thought it would be great to put in a book and share with everyone. This is a book I could use as a manual or a reminder when things get too messy in my head. There are more than a 100 bits of advice in there but I am sharing  5 which I try to apply every single day.

Don’t be afraid to ask a question

Kevin would get along really well with my grandma who always told me “if you ask a question you might look stupid for once , if you don’t ask you will stay stupid for the rest of your life”. And most of the times 90% of the people (peers, friends etc)  have the same question but are too afraid to ask because it will spoil their image.

Listening is a Superpower

People nowadays listen or better, hear because they are in desperate need to answer instead of trying to understand where the other person is coming from. And usually the people who never listen are those who always say “you are not listening to me” because they always have this need to impose their opinion on others. So next time, let’s practice less talking and more listening.

Learn how to learn from those who disagree with you

Conflict is not a bad thing if  it promotes peace. In other words productive disagreement can lead to solutions as long as it doesn’t come along with criticism and offensive attitude. Sometimes the way we say things cultivates the soil for others to listen better or shut you down forever. Kevin goes a little bit further and says that even from the people who offend you, you can try to search for the truth. I wouldn’t  go that far; peacemaking,  kindness and diplomacy run in my genes so next time we disagree let’s do it in a nice way.

Being enthusiastic is worth 25 IQ points

The story of my life. I don’t know if it makes you more intelligent but it definitely fights depression and pessimism so this advice is a one million dollar “secret” that Rhonda Byrne completely forgot to include in her book.

Always demand a deadline both from yourself and from others

In other words time management is the most useful advice for getting things done and not falling in the trap of perfectionism. We are trying so hard to be perfect and compete with others that we tend to forget that the most beautiful things in life are stunning because of their imperfections.  And as Kevin says,  and I agree 100%, being different and original is much better from being perfect.

“We have learned to look so much at the details that end up losing the forest for the trees”
